With the very notion, we bring you the untold story of Zohra Sehgal an actor of the highest recognition. Google on Tuesday celebrated the work of this iconic actress and dancer with a doodle. On this very day of 1946, Sehgal’s “Neecha Nagar” was released at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Google this was India’s first international critical success and went on winning the “Palme d’Or prize”
“The half-witted Prophesy”
After reading a young girl’s palm, an old astrologer prophesied “she is going to die at 18” the young girl was none other than Zohra Sehgal as she grew up and attained great celebrity status worldwide. Look at her fate! Sooner another astrologer called Mullahji who prophesied she would die at the age of 62. But then, life had other plans for her, she turned 62, then 72. She fell severely unwell at 82, she thought she was definitely going to die this time. But no, she beat death. People were now talking about her immorality. The Grand Old Lady of Bollywood survived till 102!
Born in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, Zohra Sehgal started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935, she then worked with Prithviraj Kapoor’s Prithvi Theatre. She met Kameshwar Sehgal It was then that love came calling. Even though she was eight years older than Kameshwar Sehgal the couple tied a knot in 1942, but fate was always playing a dismal role in her life, the couple couldn’t live together long as Kameshwar committed suicide in 1952. She decided to move on with her life and in 1962, she went to London on a drama scholarship.
Zohra Sehgal's full name is Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan.
“The half-witted Prophesy”
She became the first actor to have appeared on “Doctor Who” to celebrate their 100th birthday and became the oldest living actor to have appeared on “Doctor Who” until she died in 2014.
She worked in numerous English films and popular TV productions such as “My Beautiful Launderette” and “Tandoori Nights”. Thereafter, she has appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor. Sehgal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001, and 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi. India’s National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama presented her with its highest award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2010.
She was an example of the “change your thoughts, change your life” idea. The mind is just as a muscle that requires regular training to keep strong. One way to train your mind is by learning new things.
She imbibed all of it and was practical to the core to keep herself away from unnecessary sentiments. She had dictated that upon her death she wanted to be cremated and buried without fuss or problems, and told her family to flush her ashes down the toilet if the crematorium refused to keep them.
