Born in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, Zohra Sehgal started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935, she then worked with Prithviraj Kapoorβs Prithvi Theatre. She met Kameshwar Sehgal It was then that love came calling. Even though she was eight years older than Kameshwar Sehgal the couple tied a knot in 1942, but fate was always playing a dismal role in her life, the couple couldnβt live together long as Kameshwar committed suicide in 1952. She decided to move on with her life and in 1962, she went to London on a drama scholarship.

Zohra Sehgal's full name is Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan.

She became the first actor to have appeared on βDoctor Whoβ to celebrate their 100th birthday and became the oldest living actor to have appeared on βDoctor Whoβ until she died in 2014.
She worked in numerous English films and popular TV productions such as βMy Beautiful Launderetteβ and βTandoori Nightsβ. Thereafter, she has appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor. Sehgal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001, and 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Indiaβs National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama presented her with its highest award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2010.
